Target has lost over $10 billion in just 10 days. The retailer is being financially eviscerated right now as investors sell off its shares, consumers reject its products, and executives fear the added financial problems will be translated into more store shutdowns, price hikes, and lower profits over the next few quarters. The company is in real danger, experts say. And that means Target may be the next one to fall during the Great Retail Collapse.
The decline of Target may happen sooner than everyone could have imagined. Since the start of the month, the retail titan is being absolutely hammered on the US stock market as investors go into full sell-off mode, wiping out $14 billion of the company’s market value. It all started after the company reported sluggish sales growth, disappointing forecasts for earnings for the rest of the year, and more recently, a controversial product release that sparked outrage amongst some shoppers.
The debate over its new Pride collection became extremely heated on social media in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the company announced that it would remove some of its controversial items as a result of threats made to its staff in stores. David Evans, the Chief Insights Officer for Collage Group, a consumer research firm, believes that Target failed to access the problem promptly and it became way too big to ignore. “They probably did lose control of the narrative,” he said.
But although Target’s recent stock collapse seemed a direct result of the Pride collection drama, and this probably has weighed into it, analysts don’t think a consumer boycott is the main reason the retailer is falling apart. Things have been ugly for Target for quite some time now. The big-box chain was already facing a painful downturn since 2022, and conditions have only gotten worse as Americans continued to cut back on non-essential spending amidst a weakening broader economy, according to CNBC.
Meanwhile, CEO Brian Cornell says the company is aware of the challenges consumers are facing this year and how this will impact sales growth, profits, and its financial health. He stressed that the retail chain was focused on managing the financial impact of all this so it can continue to keep its stores open. During a number of interviews, Cornell said he does not want to close more stores in 2023, but data exposed during a conference call with the media shows that the big-box chain is also expected to lose over $1 billion in profits by the end of the year. 
No wonder why, the retail giant is flashing a consumer recession warning. “We continue to face elevated volatility and see a reprioritization of spending away from discretionary categories in the face of persistent inflation in groceries and essentials,” Target chief growth officer Christina Hennington said on a call with analysts. By now, the overwhelming majority of businesses in the United States for bracing for increased uncertainty and a prolonged economic recession. A recent survey conducted by the EY CEO Outlook Pulse revealed that the vast majority of US business CEOs, or a whopping 98%, are now preparing for an economic downturn characterized by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruption, and financial insecurity. The current state of the US economy should be a major red flag for companies that, just like Target, have been in trouble for several quarters in a row. One single black swan event could rapidly push them over the edge, and into oblivion.

“We’re going to face a far worse crisis than what we’re going through this moment,” says Peter Grandich, founder of Peter Grandich & Company, highlighting the massive national debt and incurring interest folks have to pay. “We have half our total revenue going just to pay the interest on our debt which is unsustainable,” he warns. Peter believes the economic turmoil we're experiencing has made the U.S. dollar vulnerable as countries around the world continue to shift away from the currency. "Many people in the world now are starting to dissociate themselves from the United States. That’s what there’s a movement to join the BRICS. The end is in sight now,” he warns. He concludes by highlighting the potential of a huge rally in the stock market if the central bank resolves its massive debt issue and shifts away from its aggressive rate-hike policy.

Disney has helped to shape the American culture. Over the years, a Disney store has become an institution – a symbol for middle-class families living the dream. However, today, it looks like the Magic Kingdom is crumbling down. The largest share of Disney’s public – middle-income households – are struggling to afford Disney tickets, products, and streaming services, and that is putting the company in a very complicated financial situation. With expenditures surpassing profits, the entertainment giant is now dealing with some billionaire losses that are leading to mass layoffs, business shutdowns, and an internal reorganization as it tries to survive the storm. CEO Bob Iger is warning about major challenges for 2023, and millions of fans will likely be devastated to lose their local Disney stores in the months ahead.
These days, the remaining Disney Stores are few and far between. They’re also mere shadows of their former selves, lacking the unique features that defined the franchise at its peak and largely today serving as an outlet for parks and online merchandise that failed to sell. It seems like the magic of Disney has been no match for the downturn in mall foot traffic and the general crisis of brick-and-mortar retail. As of today, the family entertainment and media enterprise has just 22 stores in the U.S. But what could possibly have happened to bring down such a beloved store at malls across America? 
The answer is not that simple, but one thing is abundantly clear – the company has fallen victim to what made it so successful in the first place – all the care that was put into its creation and management that many of these locations became too expensive to keep running. That’s why similar retailtainment companies – such as the Warner Bros. Studio Store – proved unprofitable.
In the few stores that are still standing, prices are rising much faster than what Disney fans can pay. A report by Business Insider, citing an analysis run for the outlet by travel firm Touring Plans, revealed that food and souvenir prices at Disneyland parks have jumped by as much as 33% since last summer. By comparison, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported earlier this month that the country's Consumer Price Index stands at 5%, meaning that Disney prices are outpacing inflation in the U.S.
This month, the enterprise is closing its Star Wars-themed hotel, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, just one year after opening. With trips starting at $4809 for two guests in a standard cabin and going upwards of $6000 for a family, it was out of reach for many visitors from the start. Over the past year, the company has also shut down several of its retail locations, according to Fox Business.
Earlier this year, the company said it wants to shut down 20% of its brick-and-mortar stores by the end of the year as a part of a new reorganization plan. Unfortunately, the closings may be the least of Disney’s problems. The enterprise is facing a media industry in turmoil, plunging cable subscriptions, a still-recovering box office, massive streaming losses, skeptical shareholders, management changes and layoffs, and growing labor disputes with employees. That’s a lot for CEO Bob Iger to handle.
The decay of this global media leader symbolizes the downfall of our culture as a whole. It unveils the dire state of our economy. The breakdown of our middle class. Sadly, Disney is not alone, and we will continue to see many major companies in America going down the same path.
