The fall of the retail sector has been one of the most devastating trends for the American economy during the last 10 years. Each store closure implies that thousands of jobs might be lost overnight, and even the most well-established businesses in the country could effectively die in front of our eyes.
Fry's Electronics, for example, is one of the companies saying their final goodbyes. After more than 36 years in operation, Fry's Electronics tried everything to survive the retail calamity, including creating an online store. In 1985, the company was founded in Silicon Valley and produced toys, cosmetics, household appliances, hardware, software, and electronics. Fry's Electronics decided to close its online store entirely following a challenging few years, changes in the retail industry, and issues caused by supply chain disruptions. It is currently liquidating its remaining 31 locations across nine states.

Target has lost over $10 billion in just 10 days. The retailer is being financially eviscerated right now as investors sell off its shares, consumers reject its products, and executives fear the added financial problems will be translated into more store shutdowns, price hikes, and lower profits over the next few quarters. The company is in real danger, experts say. And that means Target may be the next one to fall during the Great Retail Collapse.
The decline of Target may happen sooner than everyone could have imagined. Since the start of the month, the retail titan is being absolutely hammered on the US stock market as investors go into full sell-off mode, wiping out $14 billion of the company’s market value. It all started after the company reported sluggish sales growth, disappointing forecasts for earnings for the rest of the year, and more recently, a controversial product release that sparked outrage amongst some shoppers.
The debate over its new Pride collection became extremely heated on social media in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the company announced that it would remove some of its controversial items as a result of threats made to its staff in stores. David Evans, the Chief Insights Officer for Collage Group, a consumer research firm, believes that Target failed to access the problem promptly and it became way too big to ignore. “They probably did lose control of the narrative,” he said.
But although Target’s recent stock collapse seemed a direct result of the Pride collection drama, and this probably has weighed into it, analysts don’t think a consumer boycott is the main reason the retailer is falling apart. Things have been ugly for Target for quite some time now. The big-box chain was already facing a painful downturn since 2022, and conditions have only gotten worse as Americans continued to cut back on non-essential spending amidst a weakening broader economy, according to CNBC.
Meanwhile, CEO Brian Cornell says the company is aware of the challenges consumers are facing this year and how this will impact sales growth, profits, and its financial health. He stressed that the retail chain was focused on managing the financial impact of all this so it can continue to keep its stores open. During a number of interviews, Cornell said he does not want to close more stores in 2023, but data exposed during a conference call with the media shows that the big-box chain is also expected to lose over $1 billion in profits by the end of the year. 
No wonder why, the retail giant is flashing a consumer recession warning. “We continue to face elevated volatility and see a reprioritization of spending away from discretionary categories in the face of persistent inflation in groceries and essentials,” Target chief growth officer Christina Hennington said on a call with analysts. By now, the overwhelming majority of businesses in the United States for bracing for increased uncertainty and a prolonged economic recession. A recent survey conducted by the EY CEO Outlook Pulse revealed that the vast majority of US business CEOs, or a whopping 98%, are now preparing for an economic downturn characterized by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruption, and financial insecurity. The current state of the US economy should be a major red flag for companies that, just like Target, have been in trouble for several quarters in a row. One single black swan event could rapidly push them over the edge, and into oblivion.

Walmart is warning American consumers that hard times are ahead. This week, the company confirmed more price hikes, store closings, and layoffs in 2023. Executives, including CEO Doug McMillion, expect increased turbulence in the retail sector this year. Analysts at UBS believe almost 100,000 stores could shut down. They say a flood of bankruptcies is about to hit major US retailers, starting this summer. That comes as consumer spending drastically slows down, retail sales drop, and companies report pressure on profit margins. Walmart’s cautious note is putting other big brands on high alert given that economic conditions continue to deteriorate all over the country.
Walmart sounded alarms this week when it slashed its quarterly and full-year profit estimates. America’s largest retailer is warning that conditions in 2023 will be abnormally hard as it forecasts slower sales and profit growth, disappointing investors, and leaving other major US companies on edge. 
On top of the problems happening in its brick-and-mortar operations, Walmart reported an 8% decline in average daily visits to its website over the past 12 months. So far this year, the company already announced a large number of layoffs at its fulfillment centers and multiple store closings. Now it is saying that consumers should brace for more price hikes due to “stubborn inflation”.
In fact, a new survey conducted by Digital.com, which asked over 1,000 retail owners and executives how inflation is impacting profitability, pricing, and discount offers found that 55% of retailers have increased prices by 20% or more on average. Of those who have increased prices, 28% of major retailers raised prices by 50% or more. When asked why they have increased prices, 66% of businesses cited rising inflation, 69% supply chain issues, and 57% increased demand. Furthermore, 55% shrank discounts, and 48% increased the price of complementary products. 
Adding to consumers’ woes, about 38% of businesses said they will offer fewer discounts than last year, and 14% will not offer any at all. Walmart is certainly one of the best-positioned companies in the industry, and its large-scale operations definitely give the company leverage to stay afloat during turbulent times like these. But that doesn’t mean that the retailer isn’t struggling, and the message it is sharing with the public and other businesses is a sign that economic conditions are going to get even tougher from this point on. 
Since the start of the year, retail bankruptcies are piling up. Party City, Tuesday Morning, Bed Bath & Beyond, Joann Fabric, David’s Bridal, mattress manufacturer Serta Simmons and Independent Pet Partners, a pet store retailer, have filed all for bankruptcy in 2023. UBS analysts updated their store closings prediction in April, saying that if the economy continues heading towards a prolonged recession, the number could reach upwards of 94,000 store shutdowns. Ongoing economic headwinds may eviscerate financially struggling brands that have barely survived the pandemic-induced recession of 2020 and 2021. This time around, only the strongest will remain standing, and we’re about to find out who is who.

Redfin just reported a massive collapse in real estate investor homebuying in 2023. With real estate investor purchases down 49% YoY across America. And by as much as 64% in a market like Phoenix.

These investors are running scared from the US Housing Market because of 1) declining home prices, 2) higher interest rates, and 3) a stagnating rental market.

Markets like Phoenix, Atlanta, Nashville, and Las Vegas have been the worst hit in terms of investors no longer buying. With sales dropping by 60%+ in these markets.
